Default Need to identify a RAM chip and install a second

This RAM chip says that it is from kingston.
The top says KTC-PR266/256
2.5V
ASMM0430799

It is a 256 megabyte RAM module.

I have a second slot in the computer where I can put in a second RAM
unit that is the same size or perhaps bigger. I need to find another
one of these, but I need to make sure that I get one that works. I've
seen some that use the same model # but they have fewer of those black
thingies on the board. Mine only has 4 of them. This is going into a
gateway that is roughly about 4 years old.

Any help would be appreciated.

It would be good to know what motherboard you're talking about. You can
probably determine that from a physical inspection, or from an
application like "Everest Home Edition." The user guide for the
motherboard should outline what limitations there are on your memory
configuration.

That one is still for sale :-)

http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?...458056&cm_mmc=

But using the motherboard make and model number, or the
computer make and model number, makes it easier to search
for other options.

The following, are examples of companies that have search engines,
to make it easier to find matching product.

http://www.kingston.com
http://www.crucial.com

It is possible that memory larger than 256MB can be purchased and installed.
A faster memory can also be used in place of a slower one, so some DDR400
memory can replace some DDR266 memory.

DDR memory comes in sizes up to 1GB. The 1GB size is sold on Ebay, but I
don't recommend buying the 1GB products that are popularly offered.
There is a lot of x4 wide chips used in Ebay 1GB modules. It might
be safer to buy a 512MB or 256MB module from Ebay, as there are fewer tricks
with those. Or if 1GB modules are allowed on your motherboard, buy a
branded RAM from a place other than Ebay.

Seems to be a standard PC2100 memory module. The limit per
slot should be at least 512MB if you wanted more of an
upgrade in capacity. If this system is to be running a
larger OS like windows long term, I would think about
getting two 512MB modules instead of only one 256MB.

Unless it needs matched modules for dual channel mode, or
you could accept not running in dual channel mode, you can
also pick from PC2700 or PC3200 memory as they are backwards
compatible running at the slower speed.

However, the following appears to be the same,

I'm using windows 98. One of the things I like about it is it doesn't
use up a whole lot of memory. Still, I want to max it out. I want to
put in as much as it can hold.

The manual is the top link on this page. It claims
that up to 1GB DDR could be installed per slot, for
a max memory configuration of 2GB.

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rg/rg_prdoc.htm

Win98 has a 512MB memory limit, when no changes are made
to the OS files. This limitation is in part due to how the
address space is set up. By adding a few lines of text to
one of the system files, up to 1GB can be supported.

Vcache/MaxFileCache is the adjustment that makes up to 1GB
possible. The file is system.ini . (MaxPhysPage is only for
machines where there is too much memory installed - such as
a dual boot machine, where one OS can handle 2GB, while dual booting
with Win98. By using MaxPhysPage, you can cause Win98 to ignore
a portion of physical memory, such that it adheres to the 1GB limit.)

http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.co...6?dmode=source

This is what Crucial and Kingston show for the D845GRG.

http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...?model=D845GRG
http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/conf...sp?SysID=11647

You'll notice in those returned results, that Crucial is not
terribly interested in adhering to "DDR266", as faster memory
can be run at a slower speed. The list that Kingston shows
is more limited in that respect.

So there are plenty of options.

I grabbed another 256 chip at crucial. Only $20 :D

Maybe I'll put a pair of 512s in next year. Should be good for now.
Maybe for the long term too. I'm starting to rely on the xbox more and
more, and the PC less and less.

THanks to all of you for your help.

Everest says it's an Intel Rexberg D845GRG, and Intel's page about it
is here:

http://support.intel.com/support/mot...sktop/d845grg/

I don't know if you can use a 1GB module, but Fry's often has 1GB
PC3200 DDR modules for $30, after rebate (try to get Crucial, no
heatsinks, for reliability), and I've always been able to use PC3200
memory for mobos that called for PC2100, so long as I didn't set the
BIOS to use the "safe" defaults.

I don't know if Windows 98 (I hope you have 98SE rather than plain 98)
will benefit much from the installation of more than 512MB, and I
didn't notice any difference when I tried it with 2GB. OTOH 512MB did
seem like an improvement over 256MB. Also Windows XP was balky with
256MB but pretty good with 512MB.

BTW if you want WPA security with Windows 98SE, those $7-12 AirLink
AWLL3026 and AWLL3028 USB wireless adapters will provide it, even
though AirLink doesn't document it. They also say that the AWLL3028
requires Windows 2000 or later, but that's not true, and I'm using one
under Win98SE with machine running a 450 MHz Celeron and 768MB of
PC133 memory.

Win98 will run (larger jobs and more filecaching) much
better with upwards of 1GB memory. Granted, a lot of tasks
that make Win98 most suitable wouldn't need that much, but
so long as the needed changes listed by Paul are made, going
above 512MB is worthwhile considering the low cost of memory
today... even if it costs more than DDR2. Then again it's
the same issue as always, that if a machine has that much of
a load it becomes a matter of whether other parts like CPU
are also enough of a bottleneck that at some point the money
could be put into replacement instead of upgrading parts
depending on same era of motherboard and CPU.
