Can you provide model numbers of it, or something it plugs into?

54mm ExpressCard ? (for PCI Express bus)

PCI Express is a serial bus, while PCcard is a parallel bus, so
interchange between standards takes a bridge chip.

The 34mm one is just the narrow part of the body, and the
54mm one widens as shown in your diagram.

There is a link off the http://www.pcmcia.org/ site with
more info.

I think a few people have been surprised by the (useless ?)
hole they got on the side of their new laptops :-) I
see a few card types on Newegg, but not a real complete
set.

sorry don't have any info. think I have found what it is now
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1269435,00.asp

the port will take normal PCMCIA card. but due to the 2x2cm (apx) taken out
on the right side, means you can fully insert the card.
