Svideo has Y,C,GND,GND signals. If the C signal doesn't make contact,
this page suggests the result will be black and white.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svideo

Where you mention the "boot screen" above, are you referring to seeing
color on your regular VGA or DVI monitor, that is also connected
to the card ? Or is your problem description above, all happening
on the Svideo display device ?

I got the same result with a difference video card with TV out.
The problem turned out to be a non standard TV out connector
that looks like a standard svideo connector until you look at it
closely. I was using the composite signal, and with the video
card it was actually connected to the Y signal on the TV out.
Once I used the supplied adapter, the composite signal was
fine, full color available.

On the TV or on the monitor ? I forget what showed
on the TV with the original config color wise.

Nope, once you know what the problem is, its all rather obvious.

thanks for the reply however I see color on the TV display at the
windows xp splash screen on boot and when the computer is booted in
safe mode. The problem is really rather strange.

Color appears in the TV on boot screen and in safe mode.

Thanks

Then you likely have a driver problem. Those screens use a different
video mode to the one used when fully booted and its only that
particular video mode that is black and white for some reason.
