Hi, I've got an od scanner that won't run on XP or Vista. Is it worth my
while to resurect an old computer to run the scanner or should I buy a new
one?

Dude I got an HP Printer, Scanner and Copier for the amount of money it
cost for my previous printer's ink cartridges. Turns out to be a better
scanner than my old scanner, and better printer than my old printer, and
the ink cartridges last 5x longer.

If it's simply a matter of the software that came with the scanner
not working with XP or Vista you may still be in luck.
Look in the control panel and see if the OS has detected and installed a
scanner
and if so, just use the Windows scanning software or some alternative such
as Irfanview.
If Windows has not picked up the scanner at all,
then yes, it's time for a new XP/Vista compatable scanner...
one of the lower priced once will probably suit your needs

Which of these do you have more of: money or time?
In a way more time, scanning it's self is ok as I bought a HP all in one
that works on XP ( few summers ago at a garage sale), but I need to copy
hundreds of slides & negatives so I'm limited to what I can use.

File copying is dead easy. You can probably handle most of it with
a batch file and the copy command. Just don't limit yourself to
gui commands, which are nowhere near as useful as command line
stuff.
Please do not top-post. Your answer belongs after (or intermixed
with) the quoted material to which you reply, after snipping all
irrelevant material. See the following links:

You could just dual-boot your preset system to an older OS
installation to do the scanning. That's going to be a pain
if you had to constantly do it to scan but at least for your
bulk scanning mentioned in another post you can get that
done and then decide how often you scan, whether it's worth
the hassle of rebooting to the other OS every time you do or
if you'd rather spend the time and money buying a
replacement.
You wrote that it won't work on XP or Vista but is there a
Windows 2000 driver? If so you might try installing that on
XP, or if you hadn't checked the manufacturer's website for
newer drivers you might check there too.

One thing to consider is that unless your old scanner is
pretty high-end, you might get better results using a newer
scanner since they did improve a bit over the years. If the
HP all-in-one uses LED instead of CCFL lighting, it wouldn't
produce as good a results either as those types generally do
poorly at greyscales (including color images), are best
reserved for very flat black and white text. For a casual
scan it wouldn't matter so much but to archive a lot of
slides and negatives it may be worth the cost to buy a new
scanner.

Since you are scanning slides and negatives
you probably don't even want to use a flatbed scanner.
Might as well go for a scanner specifically designed for scanning slides and
negatives.
Thanks everyone for your imput, it's been very helpful. One of the stores I
looked in said too, that it would be worthwhile to buy new as scanners have
improved alot over the years.
Once again, Thanks.

You didn't mention in your initial post that you wanted to scan
negatives and slides. If your scanner is so old that it isn't supported
even by XP then the chances are very good that it doesn't have high
enough resolution to get decent scans from negs and slides, which
(assuming 35 mm) have only about one sixtieth of the area of an 8.5 x 11
page. You should check the specs of that oldie against what is available
now. Believe the stores, at least this time.

Sorry, but copy files? He is asking about scanning in images from slides and
negatives.

He appears to be worried about it. Scanning is almost certainly a
single operation. The multiple file copy is another matter.

You have nicely underlined the misunderstanding. He wants to copy slides and
negatives (ie. scan physical images into the computer). These things don't
exist as files already! I don't think there is a multiple file copy option
as I don't think there are any files yet - he hasn't scanned them in yet..

Try the Windows 2000 driver, if one is available. I doubt it will
work with Vista, but XP should be no problem. I have an old Umax
1220P (parallel port) scanner that runs fine under XP that way.
BTW, Umax doesn't give out drivers but only sells them, so to get them
for free you have to use www.umax.co.uk, which is Umax's support for
Europe and is run by a separate company.
I miss the days when scanners were available for almost nothing, after
rebate. Now the best deals tend to be for all-in-ones, and sometimes
if you buy a laptop or LCD monitor, a Canon all-in-one is included
free, after rebate.
Carl Pedersen was thinking very hard :

With all-in-one units so cheap, is it worth bothering with an old
scanner only? I bought one a couple of weeks ago with flat bed or page
feed scanning, fax and printing/photo printer for £39.99. Even when the
printer carts run out, it is still a cheap scanner.
