I've installed an old Creative Sound Blaster (16 bit) in a modern
computer (Intel DG31PR motherboard, if it helps). It's a PCI card. It
has behaved strangely under XP, so I installed Win98 expecting it to
work. It didn't. Most of the crash messages were simply 'an exception
0E' or so, but one was more informative.
It said that the PCI bus has some devices which are 32-bit, and some
that are compatible (or was the driver named 'compatible'? I'm not
sure). It said that this combination isn't supported. It reccomended
to find a new driver for the device, but I didn't find any.
Is there any other solution to make this combination supported, either
under Win98 or XP? Will Vista solve it? Any other idea?

Yep...I'd try the proper mfg's drivers
and if they dodn't work...just get a new card.
The idea of installing Vista just to get a $20 sound card working
does not make sense to me. I'm sure everything would just get a lot worse
anyway!

On XP (there should be no need to run Win98 or Vista just to
get this to work), try a Creative Driver named
"SBPCI_WebDrvsV5_12_01.exe", I have that driver installed on
a recent vintage P35 chipset board and it seems to work ok.
The card I used it with is a different version, SB128 I
think but the driver appeared to support several cards,
possibly yours.
The notes for this driver read as follows, HOWEVER they seem
to suggest you need to have another Creative driver
installed already and I do not think I did, rather it seemed
to install and work as if it were a standalone driver
instead of an update. What they might mean is that if you
were using some digital software package you would have to
have that installed before, instead of after this driver or
else installing the older driver after the new one would
overwrite the new files with old ones.

I only put the old card in because some old games would
crash the driver for the Aureal Vortex card it replaced (I
have a lot of really old sound cards) and unfortunately the
TV tuner application for another card wants an AC97 driver
to control volume.

I think his reason for going this route, was because he wanted
a game port, and the Creative card has one. His motherboard
has a sound solution on the motherboard, but apparently
no provision for a game port. I don't know if those USB
to game port devices would be a solution instead, because
I don't know what OSes the game solution has to run in.
If a USB to game port worked, then maybe he could use the
onboard sound to go with it.

Yes, it's that sound card. It has several issues: getting the gameport
to run was one, and this is another.
Indeed the original reason I installed it was the gameport, but that's
ancient history. The way the system now behaves is really strange, and
I want to understand it. Already I've learned a lot about the way the
OS manages drivers by analyzing it. And yet, some fundamental problem
must be there, and the system's behaviour just doesn't make any sense.

Yet it doesn seem as a compatibility issue. As I said, one of the
crash messages of the Win98 said that the PCI bus has several 32-bit
child devices and some "compatible" ones (which I take for the sound
card), and that this combination is unsupported.
