Default POST ok, but Device Mgr shows yellow exclamations for CD drives

I have a CD and a DVD drive and they show up in the POST and the Device
Manager, but in the latter with a yellow exclamation mark.

They always worked before and during startup I see the lights on booth
drives working.

Uninstalling from the Device Manager and letting Windows XP Pro find them is
ok, it finds and identifies them but never says the hardware is now
installed and can be used.

What can possibly cause this, especially since no new hardware was added and
both worked fine for months.

It doesnt do that last with optical drives.

Usually a resource conflict. That can happen
if the ESCD gets wiped for some reason.

Its where basic config info is kept. You will usually see an
Updating ESCD message on the bottom of the black bios
screen at boot time after any hardware is changed.

> and how to I go about it fixing it?

You can reset the bios from inside the bios. It
looks like setting, but its actually a one off reset.
