Default Pretty well off topic...

Nothing to do with computer hardware, I just appreciate the knowledge and
good nature in this group and I'm sure there is someone here prepared to
help me out...

Can anyone here help me with my new Tom Tom Go 300? Mine just arrived and
the system files are corrupt.

Talking the the technical support people is like talking to a 3 year old. I
know what I need, they know what I need, but their 'new' Home2 software
won't connect from either of my PCs, so I can't update the TomTom myself.
They won't email
me the system files and without non-corrupt files, the device just freezes
on startup! After a week of trying, they are now not responding to my posts
on the support forum.

The hardware works OK - USB link is all OK, SD card checks OK etc, its just
a software problem.

Can anyone out there email me the system files for the root folder of the
device (TomTom Go 300, UK version if there is a difference?). I think the 2
files that are corrupt are "System" and "TTSystem",
which are 0.5MB and 3.5MB respectively. I have googled for these files until
I am blue in the face, but can't find them anywhere, except on bitTorrent
services, which I don't trust and don't use.

Ta in advance,
GT

Help you? You have a _new_ device that does not work as advertised and have
mucked about for more than a week already. Simple procedure: Request an
RMA. Send it back. Receive a replacement. Seems pretty simple.

You would think that, but they haven't responded to my last contact
suggesting just that! This should have been sorted out within 5 minutes of
me phoning up, but no - they can't just email me the files, I have to
download and install their latest software on my PC, USB the TomTom to my
PC, then have their software update the device for me. BUT their bloody
software doesn't work either - it can't connect to their server. I really
hope they never try to organise and sort of brewery party (keeping it
clean), because they won't be able to!

Just tell your credit card company to reverse the charges... That
should get their attention.

The product is called "Tom Tom Go".

I see, I had thought this was all blaringly obvious. When you say
the product name aloud, you don't get the feeling you are talking
about like a three year old would talk?

Gotcha - sorry that one went over my head, but now I'm smiling!

Google for it - you'll see its a common problem! The system files live on an
SD card which can become corrupted (apparently easily)

If you had read the rest of the post, you would see that is exactly what I
did!

You mean more details, like listing the system files that are corrupt? See
the original post and if you read it ALL, you will see that is exactly what
I did (only in this group),

Tom Tom works much like a PC - it has some internal memory (ROM), but only a
core BIOS (type) system. The operating system and all data files are on a
fat partition on the SD card. Some of the more expensive Tom Tom Go models
do have 2GB of internal memory (mine has 32MB, currently blank), but
internal memory is still just flash memory, only non-removable.

The operating system lives in the root folder of the flash memory (SD card
for me) and the maps have a folder, voices have a folder POIs have a folder
etc etc. The reason that all this is software-based is (I presume) for
upgradability. My map data was not corrupted, but 2 of my systems files in
the root folder were.

Trust me, the operating system is on the SD card. Its BIOS is inside the
device. If the operating system were built in to the device, then it would
not be upgradable!

Yes TomTom is GPS.

That may be true but it doesn't have to be, devices can
check for presence of a file on external media and flash
upgrade themselves (to a newer OS) in this way to upgrade or
replace it.

The problem is all sorted now - the system files were indeed corrupted.
After a week the TomTom support people suggested using an older version of
their Home software, which worked instantly. They still insist that there is
something wrong in my setup here, but as I pointed out to them, I am not a
novice with computer equipment and software configuration and every other
damn thing on my network works perfectly when connecting to the outside
world - even their own software works, but they are having none of it!

Map data (in Maps) folder was safe, just 2 system files were corrupted. I
have since bought a new SD card (2GB to replace 128MB). There is no need to
make the SD card bootable, just format it FAT and install the appropriate
files in the correct folders. Perhaps the device has a basic BIOS and OS.
The system files are perhaps just all the applications.
