Re: Replace Gateway Model MX6214 Screen or Repair ?

Which works best on Bellsouth DSL ? A Gateway or Toshiba? They both have
built in wireless cards.

What would you do ? I bought 2 Notebooks. Both have cracked screens. What
should I do ? Buy a used Notebook, or only the screen or send them to a
shop that repairs the screen?

Is that a good idea to have a Notebook screen repaired instead of replaced?
I have no experience with Notebooks

All I know is they are very expensive to buy, fix or add accessories.

1. Gateway Model MX6214 which cost about $600.00 new. An external monitor
was connected. It boots up. Runs perfect. DL'ed all the MS Updates which
tells me it has a legitimate ( I am not sure how to spell legitimate ) copy
of Windows XP Home. It has the 25 digit key sticker on the bottom.

2. Toshiba Satellite M45 S169 which cost about $1,000.00 new. It loads up
with an external monitor. But it is not working correctly. I tried to
reinstall / repair / from the original Toshiba CD / OS / Utilities. The HD
will have to be connected into another Notebook or External USB 2.5 HD
connector for testing. Maybe it needs to have all the cables and
connections reseated / reconnected.

So, trade the Toshiba for a Gateway? Or would you sell the Toshiba on eBay
and buy a used Gateway or Gateway Screen ? What would you do ?

Thank you from New Orleans - you'all pass by and eat some Seafood Gumbo

It should make no difference whatsoever relative to
Bellsouth DSL. However, one or the other "might" have a
better wifi network card and/or antenna/positioning, so one
might be able to maintain a better wireless connection to
your access point or wireless router. Since I dont know
exactly how either are set up, it would most likely require
a direct testing of both in the intended environment.

Do you "need" 2? Why did you buy 2 broken? I would sell
one and fix the other, "IF" once fixed it is worth the
repair cost.

Why did you buy them, what was the plan at that point?
Unless you are starting a notebook museum it seems
unnecessary to buy yet another notebook, before selling or
repairing those. If you can find a suitable replacement
screen then yes, either repair it yourself or send it away
though it might cost more than it's worth to send it away,
leading back to the question of what your original
intentions were when buying them.

I don't think a cracked screen is "repairable", the panel
inside needs swapped.

The Toshiba seems spec'd as roughly Intel Celeron M
Processor 380, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive. Today that's
not worth $1000 brand new, let alone broken and
(malfunctional somehow, you need to determine if the fault
is correctable, certainly whatever broken the screen could
have damaged the hard drive or any other connector- even
mainboard itself. So figure out if it works at all, hunt
down prices on the screens with and without something else
installing it.

I have no idea what to make of this. I suggest you sell
both of them and just buy a new notebook when you see a good
deal on one. Then you have one brand new working notebook
with a warranty and it shouldn't cost much more than total
investment in these two plus one working screen.
