Default Sony Vaio PCG-GR215SP memory upgrade?

Has anyone managed to upgrade their Sony Vaio PCG-GR215SP from 512MB max
memory (2 x 256MB) to 1 GB using:

2 x 512 MB SDRAM memory module
133 MHz SO DIMM 144-PIN

Hypertec make this memory

According to this spec, it can only take 512 total.
Standard Memory : 256MB (Removable)
Maximum Memory : 512MB
Total Memory Slots : 2

Yes I understand that is the Sony spec but I thought as this laptop is
perhaps 6 years old they spec would not then have mentioned larger memory.
I'm used to desktops not laptops so I thought I would see if anyone had
actually tried it and what memory did the system then report?

I`ve got a sort of equivalent Toshiba, (age wise) and it only
supports 512.
I wouldn`t waste your money trying.
Plus you might knack the machine.

If you can find out what chipset is used, then you could check the
makers site. The chipset is what determines max memory.

Pen,

Chipset is Intel 830.

Memory controller is Intel 82830M/MG/MP
I/O controller is Intel 82801CAM (ICH3-M)

I searched around the Intel site but could not find anything relating to
maximum memory for the above.
