Default Trouble wirh a Card Reader. Images look bad.

I have trouble with a SIYOTEAM card reader. After putting in a SD card some
images look different. Different color's in squares. The funny thing is on
my old laptop zero problems. I checked the reader on 3 different PC's and no
problems at all. Also where is the problem here? I checked the RAM with
MemTest, two times and had 0 errors. It looks that the reader has trouble
to transmit data correctly. A video on it has bad data too. I had Apacer
reader before but it does not work anymore. My both Samsung mobiles work
well as storage devices. Images and sound files have no errors. It's a AMD
Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2,61 GHz and 3GB RAM, RAM: 2x 1GB
Twinmoss, 2x 0,5GB Twinmoss., Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-MA69G-S3H, Graphic
Card: 8800 GT, OS: WIN XP PRO SP2

I find it hard to believe that your card reader is corrupting files in a
manner that just reduces JPEG image quality.

Hard to tell what causes this. Even a video file was played wrong. It looks
like there is a conflict between the card reader and something else. I used
a different card type and had the same result.

When plugged in i have 3 devices in the device menager:

Hard drives: Generic Card-Reader USB Device
(USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_GENERIC&PROD_CARD-READER&REV_1.03\20100120100004&0)
Drivers: (DRIVERS\disk.sys)(drivers\PartMgr.sys)

Mass Storage Device USB (USB\VID_1908&PID_0222\20100120100004)
Drivers: (drivers\USBSTOR.sys)

Universal Volume (STORAGE\REMOVABLEMEDIA\7&2D4BB6B9&5&RM)
Drivers: (drivers\VolSnap.sys)

It's possible a connector is loose or a cable slightly broken, but I
don't think so because that will usually cause much worse failure.
The card reader could simply be incompatible with the USB port of that
one computer (everything works with Intel and NEC USB ports, but VIA
seems to be OK, too). Also did you test with the same SD card in each
case? And what happens when you simply try to copy the files from the
SD to the troublesome computer? SD cards bought from Ebay and some ot
her dealers are terrible in quality and will have bad bits.

Don't use MemTest. It's a Windows-only diagnostic, unless you pay $15
for the self-booting CD. Instead use MemTest86, MemTest86+, or Gold
Memory (beat MemTest86 in RealWorldTech's evaluation). Also 2 times
isn't nearly enough to thoroughly test memory; any diagnostic should
be run for at least 12 hours continuously if no errors are found, and
one person found an error, but it didn't reappear for 9 hours.

Fake TwinMOS??? That's not to say genuine TwinMOS is very good; the
only memory you can trust is the kind with clearly identifiable major
brand chips with legible manufacturer logos or part numbers that
Google to a real data sheet. IOW if it has heatsinks on it, be
suspicious. If the voltage spec is abnormal (more than 1.50V for
DDR3, more than 1.80V for DDR2), the memory was made with factory
reject chips.

One thing you may have overlooked is your graphics card settings.

Make sure that the screen 'Color quality' is set to 'Highest (32-bit)'
on the 'Settings' tab, when you right-click on an empty part of the desktop
and select 'Properties'.

If this is set to anything else, images and videos may display the
wrong colours.

If that is OK, try installing the latest graphics drivers for your
on-board graphics.

If still bad, there may be a fault with the TFT screen itself, the
onboard graphics chip, or the memory used by the graphics chip (which
may be shared main memory.)

If you suspect the TFT panel, plug a monitor into the external
display port (if it has one.) If everything looks OK on that, your
inbuilt TFT panel may be bad.

It is virtally impossible that the card reader has anything to do
with this.

Apologies for mis-reading - I though this was a laptop.
However, much of it (except faulty panel and trying an external monitor) applies.

The problem is only whnen i look at the images from the cardreader or copy
them to hdd. All other images: from the mobile phone and hdd look good. I
have only problem with the cardreader. It transmits sometimes bad data at my
PC.

Too many possibilities and you aren't telling us enough. If the card reader
is truly corrupting the data then there should be more visible than a
little bit of pixellation (what you describe if I'm reading it correctly).
You say that sound files transfer correctly but the card reader has no idea
what sort of file you are transferring and it would corrupt one format the
same as another. That makes me suspect a software or setup problem on the
computer which seems to have the problem.

How are you transferring the files from the card?

What format are the files in?

What application are you using to view them?

Is there any difference in the methods you use to copy and view the images
on one machine and another? For example, if the images are in a RAW format
do the various machines have the same RAW software and are they set up
identically? The same viewer?

Do you know how to calculate an MD5 hash? If you do, you can try
calculating a hash for a file while it is no the card, then copy the file
over to the computer (using Windows Explorer, not some other application),
then calculate a hash for the copied file. The hashes should be identical.

Did you try opening a picture other than gay **** on the card reader?
How did it look then?
