That is my suspicion but I have no way to find out, unless someone
comes up with a way.
I have never used Alcohol and I am using Nero 6.
I have deleted all the mounts in the Registry and all the devices in
Add/Remove Hardware. When I reboot Windows tells me I have a new
device and to reboot. I do that and I have two devices attached as
before.
The names are different: One is "System (C:)" and the other is
"System". When I use a defragger like PerfectDisk, I can see two
distinct GUIDs for the two devices. I always use the one designated
"System (C:)" for defragging. The name "System" is the volume label.
I tried changing the label to "C-Drive" in My Computer Properties.
That caused the one originally designated by "System (C:)" to change
to "C-Drive (C:)" in PerfectDisk. However the other device remained
"System".
Then I rebooted and this time PerfectDisk reports the same new name
for both devices. So whatever is going on, it's happening at startup.
The same sort of thing happens with the second disk on channel 0
Slave. So the problem appears to be global.
BTW, the same thing shows up when I use Win2K Defragger - I get two
devices per disk.
Is there something I can look for in the Event Viewer - some
application that is causing this. For example, I always get the
Application Log event
Event Type: Information
Event Source: WMDM PMSP Service
Event Category: None
Event ID: 105
Date: 9/3/2006
Time: 11:35:32 AM
Description:
The service was started.
Otherwise nothing suspicious is being reported.
Could it be the Avast Anti-Virus application is creating a virtual
device it uses to monitor disk activity?
