type of RAM

Hi,

this is what I get when I try to get the type of machien I have
..
Sony Electronics
VCV046XEUM
Intel(R) 82815 Processor to AGP Controller - 1131
256 RAM
..
I need to upgrade my machine to have 512Mb or more of RAM.
..
How could I know what type of -compatible- RAm to buy? and where could
I reliably buy it?
..
Could memtest help me?

Vendors, such as PNY, have a utility on their website that can determine
what memory chip can be used in you PC or laptop.

It'll let you know if your ram is working.

I strongly suspect you have PC-100 or PC-133.

Download Everest or Aida32 to get MUCH better system info.

I'm not that familiar with the Intel 815 chip set (or is this the
815e?), but the 256M/stick limit may also indicate you need PC133
memory that's also PC100 compatible, meaning it needs at least 16 chips
for 256MB, at least 8 chips for 128MB. Otherwise, the system may see
only half of the module's capacity

I couldn't find anything listed for that Sony model number at
www.crucial.com, but www.kingston.com indicates I was wrong about the
PC100-compatibility, 16-chip requirement for the 256MB PC133 modules,
and you can also use 8-chip, PC133-only 256MB modules, which should be
much easier to find. Also, according to the Sony documentation you
provided, your motherboard uses the Intel 815e chip set, and this is
the most important factor in the memory requirements.

Call Sony Electronics Customer Support and give them your computer's model
number and they can tell you.
