USB HD Enclosure problem

I bought a an enclosure today for a 2.5 travelstar from a now
non-functioning laptop. And it was duly put in the enclosure ever so
carefully, the LED lights up fine. However when I plug it into the
computer XP picks it up for a second and then says there was an error
installing immediately after and it doesn't show up on 'My Computer'.
The instructions are particularly unhelpful, (and consist entirely of
"Put HD in box. Close box. Plug box into Computer"), any help or
advice would really be appreciated.

Could be a power problem. If the drive draws exessive power, you
could get this kind of behavour. (It could even explain the
laptop not functioning :-)

That's 'plug and play' :-)

First thing I would do is to plug the drive either in another
laptop or in a normal PC via a converter-frame.
