Default What can I do with this infrared receptor?

I have a Sony VAIO PCG-F409 laptop with an infrared receptor on the
left-hand side. Do you know what I can do with it? Can I have wireless
networking? Please let me know!
More info: http://tinyurl.com/2mja8y
Thanks!

Could be one of these...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irda

Trivia for various OSes here. Can be used with
mobile phones, printers, and other computers, any of
which are equipped with IRDA.

I used mine to dial up via my Psion's modem:

when my laptop's internal modem drivers were giving me problems.

Can't think of too many practical uses these days though.

It's handy for synchronising contacts/backing up your mobile phone, or
changing its wallpaper or ringtones, etc.

If your phone and laptop has Bluetooth, that is preferable, but IrDA is
handy if they don't.

If you have a Nokia phone you can install the PC-Suite software. I think
just about all phones have similar programs these days.

Don't be so hasty! I'm told that, with the right software, you can get them
to emulate a TV/VCR/DVD remote control!!

ROFL I can just imaging sitting in the living room whilst the TV is on and
then it suddenly changing channel by commands from my lappy!!!

Of course another use for the infra red device is to transfer files between
computers.

PS Well done for not having a cellular 'phone!

I had an old NEC computer with infrared and it was for voice recognition.

How does that work then???

When I answered that post, months ago, I forgot to mention that you can
synchronise your Outlook calendar with your phone as well as your Contacts.

And the best thing you can do is use it to give your laptop modem access to
your phone, so you can access your emails on a train, or anywhere with no
wifi, through dial-up.
