I am running W98 FE in this particular machine. I just bought a
USB hub, to bring the connectors out in the open. That installs
correctly, as far as I can see, using the original CDrom. However
when I plug in the memory stick the system cannot find a driver.
So can anyone tell me where to find the appropriate driver?
Incidentally, the memory stick 'just works' on my Ubuntu machine.

USB Mass Storage is mentioned in an entry on this page.
Apparently someone packaged up a bunch of Microsoft
updates into a "service pack". The trick would be,
tracking down which Microsoft update (if it was even
Microsoft), provided the improved USB Mass Storage support.
The necessary info is on an MSFN forum, and the
forum is currently down for hardware maintenance.
So info on the contents of the Service Pack, awaits
the return of msfn.org .

One of the things that Second Edition did was impove support for usb
devices. few companies wrote drivers for usb memory sticks for First
edition.
That said, check the website of the manufacturor of your stick. You
never know. Second edition drivers will likely not work.

Among the Win98 updates that I still have sitting here for any fresh install of
Win98 (FE) is one that had the name, or that I had given the name:
Win98_usb_update_wucsp.exe and it's named internally:
w98csp.exe
I see that http://www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/59/59992.htm
gives a good explanation and it should be what you need. Just let me know if
you'd like me to email you a copy.

After an agonizing registration routine I downloaded that (about 1
meg for wucsp.exe) and I shall try it out later. Then we will see
if the stick comes to life. Crucial (the source for the stick)
hasn't got anything for other than ME up. I hate upgrading
anything. Especially blindly.

Therein lying my reason for offering to email you a copy

It should work as I can't think of any other hurdles in regard to USB that were
left to be solved. I needed it myself to access an external USB HD. If it's of
any comfort, I never encountered any problems whatsoever with that patch.

Thanks. If I had realized the reasons I would have taken you up on
it. It's definitely a comfort that it works for you. Can you
confirm the following MD5sum?
17361a4eebe10dbf406f782a1eab5d69 *wucsp.exe
If it doesn't match I will take you up on the email. At any rate I
won't install it until after I hear from you again. I try to take
this system down about weekly.

Running an MD5Sum on mine gave a perfect match to that one. I keep a collection
of various drivers on hand in case I ever re-install Win98 on this system and
that USB one and a vtdeo driver, for example, are ones that I need. I've used it
any number of times with various Win98 installations and it has always been
trouble-free for me.

Tried installing that, and I still can't use the memory stick.
Unknown device shows up when it is plugged into the hub. Now what.
:-( Maybe you have a suggested driver? The device is 512 MB Gizmo
from Crucial. It just sits there flashing a led about every 2 to 3
seconds, so something is going on.
Trying your email address, as this maybe should get off the group.
