hey, i just got the dell 24" widescreen lcd monitor. I'm running it on
a AIW 9800 pro in windows xp pro. the dell cd that came with it didnt
help me, nor did dells tech support (i officially despise dell service)
Anyways, all im looking to do is use my monitor in portrait mode, so
that the operating system orientation will be in portrait mode. I have
the latest catalyst drivers for my radeon, but i still cant figure out
how to get this to work. ive become pretty frustrated, so any help
would be much appreciated.
thanks

The ATI drivers should allow you to rotate the display. The DELL monitor
provides no feedback to the PC to tell it that the position has changed.
I'm running nVidia hardware, so I can't say where in the drivers it is, but
that's where you'll find the settings you need. If they aren't there then
you need a new video card or new drivers.
After shelling out so much for a 24" monitor (I love mine), you should be
able to splurge and spend another $50-$150 for a new video card.

Catalyst can be rather counter intuitive to use.
Set the View to Advanced. In the Displays Manager,
right at the bottom, there is a Rotation option box.
Is Catalyst Control Center an actual program that one can open and
change setting in? Anyways, I'm not quite sure where you are referring
to, so I couldn't pull that off. When i right-click the desktop -->
settings --> advanced, i dont see anything dealing with rotation.

With my gforce 4 in the advanced screen, click at
the "gforce....." button and you get the portrait
option.
So I think it depends on your graphics card.
i agree that is must depend on the graphics card, but i just cant seem
to work around the catalyst driver and control center. i installed the
latest edition, but it is impossible to enter catalyst control center
for me. if i try to open it, i get an hourglass for like 5 seconds,
then nothing. if there is any program to do this for me, since
catalyst is giving me such trouble, thatd be cool too.

Yep, it puts an icon in the systray, where the
clock is, and double clicking on that starts it.

I meant doing that inside Catalyst. Start it as I said above.

You should be able to start it from the systray, from the Catalyst
tab in the Screen Propertys/Advanced, and from the Start menu.

It does take a while to start. Try reinstalling it.

You can also right mouse click on the ATI icon in the systray,
select the monitor if you have more than one in used on a dual
head card, and use the Rotate entry in that popup menu.
Have you got all the (ick) DotNet updates from Microsoft?

Why did you buy a widescreen if you wnat some height on the display?

How is 4:3 better than 9:16?
At 24", any direction should be plenty big enough!

One would think so, but as the OP has found it doesn't
work that way in reality, it's only suitable for wide obiects it's
a pretty one dimensional screen ratio.

Well clearly the OP has a need to use it in portait more, so it seems the
wide aspect ratio is a problem despite the 'big screen'. It is fairly
self evident that something wide in 'one dimensional' as by definition it is
lack height.

well, catalyst sucks. this 24" monitor is beautiful though, i dont
understand why widescreens are becoming so popular when the high
majority of websites still cater to 800x600 or 1024x768, i just have
tons and tons of dead space to the left and right. anyways, i tried
pivot pro trial, and it worked like a charm. ati needs to improve
catalysts interface and usability significantly.

Widescreen is derived from the restricted view in a cinema above the heads
of the people sitting in front of you.
Some people think it art, as the director intended etc.. but I know it's
crap.

Well it does also present a more realistic view as human
eyes' field of view is closer to widescreen than 4:3, but
the applications have to be there too.

Incorrect.
The humans field of vision, measured my the anglular ratio of the
horizontal and vertical fields is 4:3. (180/135).
Thats why it was used originally, it is the human field of vision.
Widescreen should be called limited height, thats all it is.

This is definately wrong... My field of view is much wider than a 4:3 ratio.

I think you will find that my figures of 180 and 135 are pretty accute.
Also the field of visioni without shifting the eyes is esentiall 1:1 ie
round.
A million miles away from widescreen.

Oh bullshit. You're ignoring the fact that we have two eyes.

Mindlessly silly, particularly with what matters in the field of view.
