Yellow Bang in Device Manager for USB, Why? Help Please.

Hello everyone. I'm trying to get an IDE Internal Aopen DVD-ROM to
connect to a Laptop using a Bytecc BT-200 IDE ---> USB converter, so
that the Internal DVD-ROM drive will sit to the side of the Laptop.
The Laptop DVD-ROM is broke and I don't want to buy one for $400.00.

So, I have a USB 2.0 Port on the back of the Laptop. I'm running XP
Pro SP2.

I connect the IDE end of the converter to the Internal, (now External),
DVD-ROM drive, then I connect the USB end of the converter to the USB
Port on the back of the laptop. I have the DVD-ROM drive Jumper set to
Master.

In Device Manager, it sees the DVD-ROM as "USB Mass Storage Device".
Now, you need power to the DVD-ROM drive. As soon as I connect power
to the ROM drive, the device shows a Yellow Bang in Device Manager.

I know that the Bytecc BT-200 IDE ---> USB converter works because I
took it back to the place I bought it, and the guy hooked it up to his
computer and I saw the computer accessing the ROM drive that he had
hooked up to it. You don't need any drivers.

I can never see this drive in Windows Explorer.

I have also tried this with a stand alone Desktop computer with the
same setup as the Laptop, I get the same problem her too!

I have tried to use a different DVD-ROM drive, an HP, but the same
problem. Again no extra drivers needed here, as the HP drive is from
the same computer that I'm trying to get it to work with externally
through the USB port and all the HP drivers for this drive is already
on the computer.

Does anyone have any ideas?

What happens if everything is hooked up, including power to the DVD,
before you turn the laptop on?

Hi Bennett, the same thing. No matter what I do the computer won't
recognize the DVD-ROM. Just Yellow in the Device Manager. Install,
uninstall. Disable, Enable. Plug in after the computer boots, plug in
before the computer boots. Apply power to the DVD-ROM before the
Computer boots, apply power after.

I have tried every combination, same thing.

1USB 2.0. root hub. 3 USB root hubs. 3 VIA 5 USB Universal Host Controllers
and 1 VIA USB Enhanced contoller.
This covers version 1, and version 2 USB.
Have you got version 2 support ?.

When you took the adapter back, did you try your drive with it or
another? If you did not see it work, maybe there is something wrong
with your drive. Maybe the external power is messing with the supplied
USB power.

What is the exact condition of the old IDE drive? Is it still in the
machine and what was wrong with it?

Hi Clark, thanks for replying. No, I did not take my drive in when I
took back the adapter. If I still can't get it to work by Friday, I
will do that.

The old drive that was in the Laptop no longer reads any discs, so I
wanted to just use an internal Aopen drive that I have, that I took out
of my Desktop. It has been working with no problem. I have another HP
DVD-Burner drive in my Desktop too, so I won't miss the Aopen drive I'm
trying to get to work with the Laptop. I also tried the HP Drive with
the Laptop, and the same thing. I also tried the the Aopen with my
Desktop system using the Adapter and the same problem.

So for the $25.00 that I paid for the adapter I was trying to have a
DVD-ROM, that I already had no real use for, that I can use with the
Laptop, instead of buying a new Internal Laptop drive for $400.00.

If I don't hook up the external power to the DVD-ROM that I'm trying to
get to work with the Laptop, the drive won't open or close. So I guess
there is not enough power coming from the USB port on the Laptop to
power the Drive.

OK let's narrow the problem to the laptop for sure. Use the adapter and
drive on your desktop usb to see if it works. Then you would know if
the drive/adapter combination is working or not.

I don't think the master/slave jumper would be a problem while using
USB, but I don't know for sure.

Hi Clark, okay I tried to use the Aopen DVD-ROM drive with the Adapter
on my Desktop. No go. So I took my HP 300i DVD-Burner out of my
Desktop and hooked that up to the Adapter and then to the Desktop. No
go.

I phoned Bytecc support and they told me to have the drive set to
master, which I have had all long. They did not know why it would not
work.

So I'm going to go on Friday to the store I bought it, with my drive
and see if they can get it to work. I will also bring my laptop with
me.

If this doesn't work I will have to think of another solution to the
broken DVD drive problem. Maybe a USB jump drive. But that still
would not solve the CD-ROM thing. I would like to be able to read DVDs
and CDs with a drive connected to the Laptop.

If I can't get this to work, does anyone have any other solution/s to
let me do what I want to do?

The review had nothing bad to say about the combination you have, except
the plug was very tight and hard to seat and remove. I suppose you have
it on all the way so it makes good contact? But I don't really see why
it will not work with either computer.

Do you have a CD in it when you hook it up? It says it needs no
drivers, but that means they come from WinXP, not from an install disk.
The one thing about the yellow balloon was that it meant the drive
probably did not have the correct drivers. When you plug it in, do you
notice the drivers loading? Do you show a little remove icon in the
system tray? Have you tried inserting the USB cable after the drive is
powered?

If you or they can't get it to work, there are other external devices to
use. I know they make external boxes for hard drives, but I have not
looked for an external CD-ROM

tried all of your suggestions. Nothing works.

I agree with you about the driver issue. It is very strange. The
funny thing about the drivers is that I tried it on my Desktop, and I
know that there are drivers on there in XP because the drive works when
it's hooked up though the normal internal IDE cable.

Why won't this thing work? It should.

I don't see any drivers loading when I hook it up. I do get the remove
USB icon in the tray. XP does see it as a MASS Storage Device.

Oh well, too bad. $25.00 is a nice fix for my problem. I'll see what
happens on Friday.
