Default Fraudulent business solicitation on the Internet

Advice needed please:

I've received a friendly e-mail from a group of accountants in the UK
offering me advice and consultation on establishing a business in the
UK and Europe.

After a couple of e-mails I asked them for advice on establishing an
e-commerce business in the UK or Europe. They have informed me that my
'case' has been assigned to one of their consultants.

I am suspiscious as they have not quoted me any fees or hourly rate for
their services. I believe this to be an internet fraud scam and expect
them to send me a huge bill for their services that I will not be able
to pay. They might be working with local attorneys here in South
Africa as they seem to be targeting local South African business people
and professionals.

I am waiting to see now what their next move will be.

I am not sure who to contact for assistance. (Interpol or the Britsh
Foreign Office or the British Consul General in Pretoria?)

Any advice here will be appreciated.

Thanks

Francois Terblanche

You got spam.

Why are you responding to spam?

> I am not sure who to contact for assistance.

How about the owner of the IP address the email came from (you will
need to analyse the headers)? Spamming is usually against an ISP's
acceptable use policy. If enough other people report it as spam, a
responsible ISP should terminate their account.

Mike

Thank-you for the information.

I've spent 2 years working in the UK (1998-1999) and also used a
limited company then, so I am familiar using a limited company to
lessen the tax burden.

I will also give your contact details to my partner Pierre. Some of
his clients do business in Europe and the UK and he might find the
information useful.

In the mean time also feel free to add a free listing for your website
to a web directory of mine www.verismall.com

Will stay in touch.

Regards.

Hello Francois and thanks for your email which arrived whilst I was in
France on holiday

I am a Chartered Accountant in the UK so not too familiar with the CIMA
qualification although we have it here too. You might get better help
by contacting CIMA direct about this.
http://www.cimaglobal.com/cps/rde/xc....xsl/index.htm

However it is certainly true that most CIMA people in UK work in big
companies and not in private practice serving a range of smaller
clients ( as we do ourselves). Setting up a business in the UK is
straightforward enough. In most cases I recommend that this is done by
using a UK limited company. Setting up the company and registering it
with the tax authorities and dealing with the paperwork for
directors/shareholders etc would usually cost around £500+VAT.

A limited company is a good choice as it protects your private assets
and can help you manage your tax bills (the rates of tax are higher for
the self employed). A lot of start up businesses are run from home and
take on staff and premises as they grow. The UK has fairly advanced
employment protection legislation but it is not nearly as draconian as
that in France or Germany for example.

I hope that this helps give you a flavour but if you have any further
questions please let me know, and look me up if you are in the UK in
the future

Regards

Thanks for the e-mail Mike.

I am a strategic level CIMA student currently and would be interested
to know what it involves to set up a cost and management accounting
consulting practice in the UK.

Maybe you can give me a brief overview.

Are you aware of any similar practices in the UK or are CIMA's
generally permanently employed with companies over there?

I am writing to introduce my firm as accountants who specialise in
assisting businesses set up in the UK from overseas. We would be very
happy to assist you and your clients should the need arise. You can
find out about us by visiting our website at: www.jmbt.co.uk

Our experience is largely with owner managed companies who want to test
the UK market without making a huge financial commitment. In a typical
assignment the client would send a small team of sales people to the UK
to pioneer the market. We would deal with all the legal and financial
formalities of setting up here, and then, if required, provide the
business with a full administrative, legal and financial back up
throughout its life. The service is individually tailored to cater for
the needs of clients who can pick and chose the elements they want.

I have over 20 years experience of this type of work and can promise
you my personal attention to the needs of your clients.

We would like to send you information from time to time about our
services and about developments in the UK which effect business. Would
you be happy for us to do this, and if so may we have a contact email
address to use please?

Should you have any particular questions relating to doing business in
the UK, I would be happy to share my knowledge and experience with you
without any commitment on your part.

Regards
