How to determine objects in between TRACERT???

After the attacker run tracert on a destination server ... how does he
know what is the device in between - whether is it a switch, hub or
router? How can he differentiate it?

Easy. If you see it, it's a router.
If you don't see it, its either a switch, a hub or a plain cable
