Spyware performance costs?

Hello iam trying to prove to some potential clients how spyware/ad-ware can
adversly affect there pcs performance. I know from experiance that it can
slow down computers by 30% however i need a figure like that from a credible
source. Can anyone help me out with credible sources ?????

No, because the percentage of slowdown varies by piece of software.

Maybe they shouln't be YOUR clients.

You don't quantify the problems of malware in numbers like "slow down computers by 30%".
That's BS !

You have to explain the ramifications productivity loss, loss of revenue, data loss
potential, proprietary data theft, bandwidth connsumption, etc., etc.

Adware/spyware isn't just "it slows your PC down". That's a just symptom of a GREATER
problem. Understand ? PC speed degradation is but a symptom.

What if they are hit by a Keylogging Trojan that has ZERO performance hit that is, no speed
degradation noticable by the user ?

Does the potential client want all their Internet activity tracked and sent to a third party
? Maybe even a competitor !

Does the potential client want to have a Trojan performing data mining on the user's
computers ?
Can you say proprietary data or company secrets compramised ?

As much as I agree with you, blah might have good reason for
concentrating on performance. It can be very difficult to
convince someone of the need for security. In business, though,
it's almost always easier to get your own way if you can provide
hard metrics. If the only way blah can convince them to get rid
of spyware is via performance, it's still a win. (Unless you
consider Darwinian loss of the company to be the win.)

Explain the the possibility of loss of revenue and/or competitive "edge" if their
competitors get their data.

If you have to put this in numbers make them dollar signs. The cost of prevention is much
less then the cost of data loss or compramise.

Either you must educate them or you must make the decision if they are worthy of your
support.

YW. I should have mentioned that you can Google for more recent
articles. Putting businessmen and women in jail would appear to be a
cause du jour. Never underestimate the zeal of a prosecutor trying to
make a political name for him or herself.
