Using other (non-torified) apps simultaneously w/ Tor

Just a quick question, if I run Torified Firefox but in the same instance have
a usenet app running (not connected to Tor), does the
Usenet app (Astranews) break Tor's anonymity for Firefox?

I like to read political websites through Tor, but have been shutting down
nzb-o-matic (astranews) to do so. Is it
really necessary to shut down all non-Tor applications?

Shouldn't but use a FF add-on that shows your external IP address and
you'll know.
