Hi all,
Fired up my laptop this morning and noticed I have 24 wifi signals showing
up
in my site survey, I doubt many of them would be strong enough to use, but
it
made me wonder.
What is your record number of wifi signals detected from one spot?
Without turning your antenna?

Lets see.. I can make out 4 extremely weak signals from neighbors, so I have
a total of 12.
Yeah, I know, I am a whore for putting out 8 SSID's... :/
They are all spread throughout 802.11a and 802.11g..
My "justification" for having 8 is that they are broken out on logically and
physically seperate networks. Several 802.11a's make up a network for WLAN
and computers' internet. Another network consists of 802.11g's for media
devices. Then I have a completetly open network with a couple 802.11g's for
anyone to use as my house is adjacent to a park. The open network goes
through a captive portal, of course. It filters against anyone trying
juvenile BS, blocks anyone trying to run services, filters porn, etc...

Ok, maybe I'm cheating a little too, I have a 7 story condo about 125
yards from me.
I think most of the signals come from it. Going by the names I think one is
from a motel,
another from an office and there might be a dentist office. At the moment I
see 23 signals
10 encrypted, 13 not.

Hmm this is more interesting than I was expecting:)
Of the 20 or so that I see, all except one is encrypted
and I cannot connect to it. I guess mac addresses locked
down.
I am in London, UK and everyone seems to be locking them
down here. Mostly WPA or better too.
As a first guess I suppose you are in the USA.
Curious difference. Of course perhaps Operation Ore
may have focussed peoples minds.

Most ISP's in the UK issue wireless routers with encryption enabled.
There are 18 AP's in my vicinity:
1 x open Business premises which allow access for visitors
1 x WEP
12 X WPA-TKIP
4 X WPA2
Many have not changed their SSID but they are unique.
6 are prefixed SKY followed by a unique set of numbers
6 are prefixed BTHomeHub followed by a unique set of letters and numbers.
The remaining 6 are all unique and none use the default SSID.

Nice to have that confirmed, I had guessed that they were doing
it. I suppose it is a good business decision for them since if
people could connect to their neighbours then the ISP might
sell fewer DSLs.
My ISP did not do that. AOL. I know, I know, but the deal suited
me at the time (no contract) and it works ok.
