I have a home network with a cable modem connected to a link sys
router. I have a desktop running windows xp connected to the router
through a cat-5 cable, and two laptops running windows xp connecting
wirelessly. The laptops still connect, through my router, to the
internet with no difficulty. Suddenly my desktop, however, stopped
connecting. My network settings all seem appropriate, my ethernet
card is functional, I can use ipconfig/release and ipconfig /renew. I
can ping localhost and ping my router. I just can't ping an internet
site or get IE, firefox, AIM, etc to connect to the internet on my
desktop.

1. Have you tried all the LAN ports on the router?
2. Have you tried a different CAT5 cable?
3. Have you tried connecting a laptop with the same cable and no
wireless?
4. Have you turned off all filtering and security on the router?
5. Have you power cycled the router?
Otherwise:
Run IPCONFIG /ALL on the desktop, and post the exact output here.
It might also be helpful to have the same output from a laptop, both
wireless and wired.

And can also connect to the router via firefox and from the routers
setup page can ping www.google.com, etc, but i just can't seem to
connect directly through with anything.
Same physical and IP address. Looks like the desktop again, not the
laptop!

The DNS servers are different! Did you reboot the router? Do you have
two DHCP servers on your network?

So at one point I had set the desktop to use a fixed IP address to aid
some home networking and had to enter the DNS addresses, and when my
desktop stopped working I changed it back to obtain IP address
automatically and hadn't seen that I also needed to check back to
obtain DNS server address automatically. I guess my server changed
and that's why my auto-obtaining wireless computers still worked but
my desktop didn't.

You're very welcome. The moral of this story is how important it is to
provide detailed data when asking for help.
