This blender does a good job overall. My only pet peeve is that I've read other reviews and they said that it wasn't noisy. Well, in my opinion it's fairly noisy. My guess is that it's due to the Polycarb jar that it comes with. I had $50 Krups blender with a glass Jar before this one and it wasn't as loud. If you plan on using the "liquefy" setting a lot I would invest in a pair of ear plugs.
This blender was reviewed by Cook's magazine and found to be the best in all categories. It is quiet, crushes ice and makes smoothies so well. I had a blender that worked just fine, except smoothies were a pain because the unblended parts would stay at the top and I kept having to stir. This blender makes me happy each time I use it. I can't say enough good things about it. Worth the price!
We registered for this blender loving it's small footprint and clean looks. Perfectly happy with having a plastic (polycarbonate) jar, since it's lighter, and offers 1-piece simplicity (stick it in the dishwasher, pull it out, done).BUT, and this is a big but: the jar doesn't last. Our first one went after a few months of use (1-2 times a week ONLY). Even though it has an ice-crush button on it, I started pre-crushing the ice with our ice maker when we purchased our replacement jar (at $50!). The second jar didn't seem to take any longer to start cracking. The cracks seem to start around the handle, and work their way up and down. Slowly, but surely, the jar begins to leak onto your blender and the counter. And, of course, it's sticky and nasty, and annoying. I just ordered my 3rd jar and I'm grumpy about it. Another $50 to KitchenAid, in support of this failure of a product. I wish the glass jars would fit it, but sadly they don't. Your only choice is to replace with another doomed jar, or order a new blender... which I guess I'll have to do next time. The jar is simply not going to last, even under moderate to light usage.AVOID THIS BLENDER, and possibly any blender with a poly jar.
Like most others I've bought numerous cheap blenders over the years. About three years ago I got a heckuva deal on a KitchenAid KSB3WH4. This unit ran like it had a Hemi in it. I thought it was the last blender I'd have to buy. But after three years the motor burned out (we like to make shakes!). I disassembled the unit and hoped to find a motor for it but I was most disappointed when the best that KitchenAid had to offer was a reduced price on a refurbished unit that was similar but newer. So I shopped all sites and all brands. Almost bought a Waring unit, but ultimately decided on this KitchenAid unit, which so far hasn't disappointed me. It's more powerful and has no problem with ice cream. My son makes frosty's (they are exactly like Wendy's) and uses the unit to crush ice, which it does a great job. In fact, the ice ends up like snow cone ice, perfect for his frosty's. And I like the fact that the container is one piece - much easier for cleaning. So far, so good! Maybe this one is the last blender I have to buy!
I just purchased the KitchenAid KSB580CR 5 Speed Blender Custom Metallic, Chrome and the product works great. I agree with the review it "sounds like a Harley and cost as much as a microwave." However, I will take a loud blender any day as long as it works great and lasts. I have not blended ice but on bananas it did not require any effort. Generally you have to spoon the bananas down so the blade can chop them and typically lumps remain. The only requirement was to drop a bunch of bananas into the blender and let it puree. If you want something quiet then don't purchase the KBS580. If you want something that works....then buy it!!
