local DNS service behind a Linksys wired router?

I am using a Linksys BEFSR81 wired router with the DHCP service turned
on. I would like to be able to refer to the machines on my network by
name. Some of the computers are laptops that move from my home to
other sites, so they require dynamic IP settings. This makes using a
hosts file not practical.

I have been investigating setting up DNS on my Linux machine and I
think I understand the basics, however, I am confused how are if the
machine name, IP address pairs would be known to the DNS service since
they are generated by the DHCP server built into the router.

Is there a simple way to have my DHCP entries known to the network for
name lookup purposes?

Assuming you're willing to use dhcp from isc (on your Linux):

http://www.arda.homeunix.net/dnssetup.html

The combination of bind 9 with isc dhcp gives you the possibility
to update your DNS dynamically with dhcp entries.

Works like charm.

That is what I am learning. I had hoped to leave the dhcp running on
the router, but it looks like that is not going to be an option.
