I've just switched to comcast high speed internet. They didn't tell
me over the phone that I would need a router to connect wirelessly
through my laptop (which I was doing with the other provider). My
neighbor gave me her linksys router but I have no idea how to connect
this thing and get it up and running on my laptop. Can anyone walk me
through it? My laptop is wireless capable so I don't need to do
anything to *it*. I'm a little aggravated that they didn't tell me
this when I signed on for the bundle they offer.

Did you connect the wireless router to the modem and turn them on ? Next
turn on your pc and see if it can find any wireless signal
Yes, I connected the router to the modem and nothing. I'm reading
some instructions that I found online for the model Linksys router
that I have, but it is confusing to me.

Here is the URL to the Linksys site where you can get the quick install
guide and the user guide. I would first get the user guide and reset the
router to its defaults, not knowing how your friend had it set up. Then do
the quick install and see what happens : http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...=1115416826220
That is an 802.11b router. I have that make and model.
If you reset the router by unplugging it pressing the reset button and plugging
the router back in while HOLDING THE RESET BUTTON FOR AT LEAST 30 SEC, you will
reset it. Use an RJ45 cable between the WAN port and the modem.
Once it is reset, wireless encryption will be off, it will have gotten a DHCP
address from your modem, the broadcast ssid will be 'linksys', and its
configuration interface will be at 192.168.1.1.
Set your browser's address line to http://192.168.1.1 and you should see a login
request. Leave the user name as blank - the password will be 'admin' (without
the ' of course). At this point, you should change the password, but first play
around with the built-in web site. Other things you should change are the essid
and you should use WPA encryption with a strong password, but get used to the
configuration pages first.
This is the information I have. What confuses me (I'm not that bright
with this stuff) is that it sounds like one ethernet cable has to be
hooked into the computer. How is that wireless? Or maybe I am
missing something? I only want to use this one laptop and no others.

Typically your desktop, being immediately adjacent to the router, is wired -
that's faster and less finicky/trouble-prone than wireless. And most desktops
don't have wireless unless added by the user.
The wireless is used for your roving laptop(s) and/or desktops in other parts
of the home.

No, there is no connection to the computer. Connect it like Larry Finger
describes in his reply, but reset it first, as he describes
Thank you Larry and RMB. Ok, I did the reset but if I change the
connection from the computer to the router, I won't be able to get to
the internet to do the rest of the procedure right? Why is this so
complicated or is it just me? Gosh, with my other ISP, all I had was
the modem, plugged it in and I was connected wirelessly. This seems
like a lot of work and I'm a little aggravated that they didn't tell
me this when I subscribed, especially when I asked if I could connect
wirelessly with my laptop and he said "yes". Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

All I want this for is my laptop. We have a desktop that we rarely
use but I did have that running wirelessly as well with the other
provider. I installed something in it myself and it picked up the
service and worked well.

Your other company must have had a wireless router built in to the modem, or
some don't use modems. You can always plug the ethernet cable directly from
the modem to the computer, and get online.

Once you reset the router, then connect it to the modem, it should broadcast
a signal which your wireless card in the computer should find, and get you
connected
That's what I'm doing right now. But I like to use my laptop in other
places in the house and I hate being chained to the desk like this.

None of the stuff I told you needs the Internet!!! The web interface that you
will be browsing is totally contained within the router.
The connection should be as follows:
modem <========> router ~~~~~~ your laptop
Ethernet WAN radio
Cable
If you have a second ethernet cable, you may also connect
modem <========> router <==========> laptop
WAN LAN
The second choice is the more foolproof.
If the router is plugged into the modem correctly, and it is functional, it will
get an Internet address from the modem. Similarly it will dole out addresses to
the computers that are connected to either the LAN ports, or to the wireless.
Don't get flustered and throw up your hands, or whatever you are doing. This is
not brain surgery.
How does the phone line play into this. It is plugged into the back
of the modem. That should stay where it is? AND...I think I would
rather try brain surgery at this point. I'm just going blank over
this silly thing.....

Relax. Yes, the phone line stays plugged into the modem. The router knows
nothing of putting the signal onto a phone line. In fact, my router is connected
to a cable modem - a completely different transformation process.
We will start at square one again. What are the interconnections that you have?
Make the kind of simple drawing that I did. What capabilities do you have? Is
this how you are getting to the Internet?
Well, some good news. I did manage to get the signal but no
connection to the internet. I went to the address given but there is
a lot of information there that needs to be filled in?

We are a little out of sync. Did you connect to the router home page
(192.168.1.1) with a wire, or wirelessly?

I connected to that wirelessly. With the line from the modem to the
router. Got the signal indication that it was "excellent" but I think
I have to fill in all of that stuff on the page after I put in user
name and password. (just password "admin" no user name). I think
I've given up for tonight. Tomorrow is another day and I'm seriously
thinking just to buy a new one that will have software or something to
help set this up.
You guys are really helpful. Maybe I'll get there yet with your help.

We will get there. If you have a connection from the laptop to the router that
is wireless, the hard part is done. Most of the information you see in the
router can be left unchanged. We'll discuss that tomorrow.

When you log into the router, the first page you will see should be OK after the
reset. There are only 4 pages that you need to even look at.
A. Setup (selected on the main menu bar)
The critical things on this page are:
a. The pull down across from "Internet Connection Type" should read "Obtain an
IP automatically"
b. The Network Address Server Settings should have the "Enable" button
clicked.
c. Start IP Address box should have 100 in it.
All of these things should have been OK after the reset. If you had to change
anything, save the settings before leaving this page.
B. Wireless in the main menu bar
1. Basic Wireless Settings in the sub-bar.
a. You need wireless enabled - this must be on or you wouldn't connect.
b. SSID - this will now read "linksys". Change that to something unique.
This is a security issue. If someone like me sees that SSID, he can
assume that nothing has been changed on the router and that the login
password is the default. Once in, we can change anything we want. This
happened in an RV park where we were staying last December. The park
operator was providing wifi access through an open connection. Suddenly
one weekend, the router became WPA encrypted, and the park
administration knew nothing of this. The router password was the
default, which allowed someone to change the encryption, which locked
all the other users out.
c. Wireless Channel - choose 1, 6, or 11. The choice depends on how many
AP's are in your neighborhood are on each of those channels. You should
pick the least conjested.
d. Save those settings. This step will disrupt your connection, and you
will need to fix it in order to reconnect.
2. Wireless Security in the sub bar:
a. To prevent others from eavesdropping on your traffic, or accessing your
Internet connection without permission, you should enable wireless
security.
b. If your laptop will support it (and it should), select WPA Pre-shared
Key in the pull down. There are better methods, but your router does
not support them.
c. The WPA algorithm is TKIP.
d. For the WPA Shared Key, select a good and long passphrase. It should
have numbers and/or special characters. What I have done is select a
simple sentence with the characters above the numbers replacing the
spaces in turn. For example: "The quick red fox" becomes
"The!quick@red#fox$". That one is too short, but not found in any
dictionary. Remember this passphrase - you will need it for the laptop.
If you forget it, you will need to reset the router and start
configuration all over.
e. Save the data on this page. You will again need to reconnect using the
new encryption method and phrase.
C. Administration in the main menu bar:
1. Change router password here. As noted above, this is important.
Ok, Larry. I'm gonna give this a try right now. Keep your fingers
and toes crossed!!

Ok...I got as far as "e" and then I couldn't access any more on the
page. It would revert to the "windows cannot blah, blah, blah page
and I can't get back on there. So, I need to know how to do the
second part of "e" "reconnect using the new encryption method and
phrase". and how to get back on to change the router password. Also,
I have disabled the radio and plugged back into the modem so I can
access this group...has that disrupted anything I've already done?
Please say no.....
