Why? DHCP works well, and helps to avoid problems.

It's not. How do you know the connection is dropping? What _exactly_
does that mean? Is it the cable modem losing the connection? The
router? One computer? Both computers?
Do you have the latest router firmware? Have you tried running DD-WRT
firmware in the router?

Try that now. The number of computers shouldn't matter.
