Don't rely on proper conversion of an alpha key. Use a hex key instead.

There is no hex key with WPA.
You're think of WEP (which shouldn't be used).

Actually, you are incorrect. With WPA and WPA2, you can either use an
alphanumeric key that is 8 - 63 characters, or a 64 digit hexadecimal one.
Maybe your router does not support this, but that does not mean that WPA
does not.
