Default slow DSL / faint line

Not sure if this is the right forum/newsgroup as I don't think the issue is
with the wireless element!

BT line TOK, so BT will not take a fault?.......using a Netgear DG834GT,

Connection staus

ADSL Link Downstream / Upstream Connection Speed 1856 kbps / 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 59.0 db 31.5 db Noise Margin 12.4 db 7.0 db

Usually the downstream is 3+mb

Heres the strange thing though... the telephone line for voice is extremely
faint. All wiring in the house checked out...OK

If I unplug the router the telephone line eventually returns to normal after
a couple of hours.
