Default SMC ADSL Router and Wireless question

Dear all

1. What is g Nitro ?
2. Why would one set the transmission rate to auto instead of the max
like 54M ? What is the benefit of setting it to auto ? I see that
when I set it to auto, the transmission rate fluctuates, so I get a
poorer performance ? Is that correct ?
3. For the SMC ADSL Modem, what is Long Range Mixed (11b+11g) ?

Thanks very much for the answers.
