Hi all,
I have had my NetGear WGR614 Wireless router (using WEP 128-bit) for a
while. Most of computers are wired into it. I use WG511 and MA512 on my
laptop one time or another. But mostly using MA512, which works reliablely
on my XP SP2 Pro.
So I just bought the WG511v2 thinking that it would be much better than the
WG511 I gave away.
What a sad disappointment.
BTW I do not have the WPA installed in my XP and hence the disconnection or
connection problem described on the NetGear page does not apply here.
I noticed that if I do not install the NetGear software but simply getting
XP to pick up the XP driver from the CD and using XP's wireless connection,
the connection stays up for little while and then suddenly 'disconnected'.
The IpConfig /all shows all the correct detail. IPConfig /release *con* does
not seem to work and the command does not come back. IPConfig /renew
resulted in the same result. I cannot ping the router and the Net. I can
ping itself and 127.0.0.1. The router does not consider it as an attached
device anymore. When the connection is available, I have set up the router
to accept this mac address and they are correct.
For some reason, I get better result if I use NetGear's software and
disabled the XP Wireless Connection tab. But still the connection can still
mysteriously dropped. The router admin page for the attacked devices clear
showed the WG511v2 dropped out.
Also it is very sensitive to my 2.4G cordless phone. In some test, it can
knock out the connection and won't reconnect until I reboot. Does someone
has any trick to kick the driver back to life?
In the same environment and test using MA512, it was steady and if drop
regain connection is a flash. The cordless phone does not seem to bother it
even though they are both using 2.4GHz and the same channel set on the
router.
In terms of signal sensitive, the distance where WG511v2 would drop out
where the MA512 is still powering along.
Is the WG511v2 a lemon? This is supposed to be v2 and should be much better
than my original WG511 card but it is not.
I have upgraded the driver to the latest on NetGear site with not luck.
I have gone back to the trusty MA512 instead and contemplate the future of
this lemon.
Anyone has any idea why WG511v2 is so sensitive and temperamental?
Thanks.
Bob
