Default WiMAX India's answer to spectrum problem, rural connectivity

India is on the threshold of a new mobile technology revolution with
WiMAX being considered as the new age reality by many mobile
manufacturers.

WiMAX is not only being touted as 30 times faster than third generation
mobile technology and 100 times faster than the wireless data rates,
but is also expected to solve the problems of rural connectivity.

"It could also solve the 'last mile' connectivity problems that
prevent internet connectivity in rural India," DoT Telecommunication
Engineering Centre Sr Deputy Director General P N Padukone said at a
'Wireless Tech India 2006' meet.

With demand for spectrum soaring, WiMAX technology is becoming the way
to avert the impending crisis.

"Spectrum is finite and the solution is increased sharing and have
greater use of the available spectrum. Actually there are at least 40
services which need spectrum," Ministry of Communication and IT,
wireless Planning and Coordination Wing Wireless Advisor P K Garg said,
adding that spectrum requirements for WiMAX are under discussion.

WiMAX promises a seamless connectivity, high speed data, voice and
multimedia services, mobility and affordability. Rural connectivity is
guaranteed as long as availability of power supply, personal computers
is ensured, content is developed in local language and people are given
proper training of handling PCs.

Alcatel Research Centre is developing a product that would act as a
receiver for WiMAX services. The product will be available by 2007 and
cost less than USD 100.
