Default Wireless cable modem queries

We are in a rural area in Canada (what's new...) and have Image
Wireless for our high speed internet/tv provider. We have a antenna
type dish they have mounted on our roof and the internet portion is
connected to an ADC V251 cable modem. Everything works fine, but they
have decided to up their rates AND start charging a rental fee of
12.99/mo for the modem, or purchase the equipment for 399.00.

Is there something special about this modem? Is there some other cable
modem we can use?

Thanks for any info
Marilyn

You really should ask Image/YourLink if they allow customer supplied
hardware. They might, depending on the frequency and type of
equipment required. However, I suspect that you will rapidly approach
the $400 cost if you purchase your own hardware and do your own
installation. Judging by your description, my guess(tm) is that it's
an ordinary MDS/MMDS or wireless DOCSIS modem.

What does the end-user equipment look like?
The equipment varies depending on the frequency of the signal, but
generally there is a transceiver/antenna on the roof connected to
the inside of the house via cable to a cable modem.

What frequency does your wireless equipment use?
We have several frequencies, depending on the customer's location.
Our equipment is based on 2.4GHz, 2.6GHz, 3.5GHz, as well as 5.7GHz
radio technology. It is 802.11b or "Wi-Fi" compliant.
