Is anyone else getting multiple calls from this number? Both my wife
and my mobiles have received 3 calls each within less than 24 hours. I
thought it was one of those scams where you call back and they invite
you to dial a time charged 1900 contest line, but I just tried it from
the landline and all I hear is STD pips then a congested tone (similar
to busy.) From the mobile I hear a ring for a fraction of a second,
then my mobile makes a sound to say they've hung up - 0:01 call time.
If it's a scam then they're not doing a very good job of it!

Maybe someone is updating a call list......no one calls back, number
is scratched.
Call back and you tell them your number is a "live one". And you are,
too.

A true congestion tone should be heard before any std pips.
I get the same result myself and since I'm not with telstra, I dont normally
get any std pips, so someone has bodged that up like that for some reason.

Most likely someone's silly idea about what makes sense now
that they are legally required to present their caller ID, when
someone trys to call it and they dont want to answer the calls.
This number is still calling both our mobiles regularly. When I manage
to answer it, there's silence and then it hangs up on me.
I guess if no one else has had the pleasure then it's not just a
random poke to see who calls back.
Side note: why can't we add fax numbers to the telemarketing exclusion
list, or at least indicate that a fax machine will answer? I've seen
at least a few numbers presented that appear to be from a marketing
company, but they're just wasting time and money by having a human
call a screeching digital signal processor... out of the number of
times the fax answers I'd say less than 5% are an actual fax.

Uncle Rod is swearing again! How typical and how childish! Perhaps Rod needs
to read another edition of Coq magazine...

Answer: The calls originate from 3 Mobile, they called me yesterday to
see if I wanted to extend my contract with them that is due to expire
soon and I noticed the call was from the number 0289863000. I got the
person i spoke to to e-mail me the offer we discussed on the phone and
the e-mail came through from 3 mobile.
