Default Ch 7's dud competition SMS

Usually when you enter a competition via SMS there's an immediate
reply acknowledging your entry (and inviting you to enter more times).

Recently Ch7's Better Homes and Gardens ran a competition over a
period of around a fortnight. During that period I sent 3 SMS's
(each supposed to cost me 55c). I received no acknowledgement to any.

I'll be examining my next bill to see what I was charged. Should I
anticipate being charged as an ordinary SMS (22c) or the 55c?

The competition number was 19 775 777

In a previous Ch 7 comp I sent 3 SMS's and received acknowledgement to
only 2, but did not check the bill to see how I was charged.

**I fail to see why *anyone* enters any competition that involves SMS. These
TV show competitions are the worst rip-offs. I guess there's one born every
minute.

It's worse than that. The SMS competitions distort the economics of
commercial television broadcasting, so that attracting viewers is no
longer a priority. As a result, we get programming that is even more
rubbish than usual.

I don't think that they are the "worst" rip-offs, but they definitely
are rip-offs. I can think of MANY worse rip-offs. So Trev, you
didn't really think that comment through did ya?

Similar to the way your parents (assuming you know who they were)
didn't think things through and consider the dire consequences when
they got drunk and spawned you?

Trev told us what he thinks. Please in future read what is written not

Actually moron, Trev DIDN'T tell us what he thought. He said outright
that these SMS's ARE the biggest rip-off. So it is YOU who needs to
learn to read. How embarrassing being you.

I've never worked out what morons get out of contributing nothing
other than being rude to other posters in these newsgroups. Why come

That happened to me once, twice or thrice. Twice I think. About a week
later the penny dropped: I had been playing with the settings of my
phone and set it to *not* send the caller ID. The phone company still
takes your 55c, even if you're not entered into the competition.

55c, because thats what they said it would cost and that is legally enforceable.

Are you suggesting he didn't THINK before he typed?

You really must be embarrassed now.

I didn't know there was a menu setting in phones to send SMS's
without a sender phone number. Not in mine, anyway.

It would seem impossible to know whether I am entered in the
competition. Maybe my phone network failed to pass the SMS onto
Ch 7's network, in which case I'm not in the comp. But maybe the
problem lies with Ch 7's reply not being passed back to my network,
in which case I would be in the comp, just not advised of it.

There isn't. SMS always have the sender number attached, but it's a
different system to the caller ID system. But I'm sure that was what
did it. I suppose that somewhere in the "value chain" between normal
network behaviour and premium-rate, auto-reply SMS the SMS header is
ignored and the network caller ID becomes authoritative. SMS headers
can be spoofed to make messages appear to come from Someone Else,
after all. (I know that's true, I saw the scare story on A Current
Affair.)

Or, it could have just been a weird co-incidence.

True, it's impossible to know.

It is true because I am a subscriber to the ISP in question and have
installed their app on several office computers using my own account.
Three computers can send SMS's to me with my own number as the origin.
At least they could before the ACA story forced them to change their
app.

Some of the VSPs, voip SPs, allow you to do that too.

The VSPs still do it.

Turns out that Optus had blocked my sending of SMSs. I rang SCT to
find out why. They said that if you send more than $20 of SMSs then
Optus regards it as premium SMS and blocks you for the rest of the
month. As I'd sent only one 55c SMS that seemed to not apply to me.
But back in July I paid for phonecard purchases by SMS and that may
have exceeded $20 so I guess it took a few months for Optus to wake
up and block me! I can't figure out why they wouldn't want us to
send lots of SMSs as Optus makes money on each. Anyway, the supervisor
restored it.

I'm now changing to Telstra. Does Telstra have this same nonsense?
