Default DST Ending and NextG

When DST ended last night my Samsung A501 NextG phone's time didn't
change.

When I manually changed it the phone asked me if I wanted to override
"network settings" or words to that effect. I took it that this meant that
the phone got its time from the network.

I changed it back to DST time then called it, thinking that perhaps it
needed a call to initiate the time change/update. However, when I called
the mobile from my home phone it didn't happen. Nor did I get that same
message as before about the network time when I manually altered it..

There is an option "Autoupdate" in the time settings menu which is
selected to "On". Presumably this is what generates the time for the phone
from the network. If it does then it's not working.

What is supposed to happen with respect to DST changes and phone's time
keeping, particularly on the NextG network? (I'm not really concerned with
how other networks do it.)

Didn't work here either (with Optarse) but this is a network dependant
service; i.e the networks may not support this.

Beware, can be a bloody nuisance if this is on and you travel overseas
to an area where the network does support.

Did with my Optarse.

Optarse clearly does.

Most phones allow that to be configured.

My understanding of the network side of it is sketchy to say the the least,
however I believe it works as below (leaving aside all the nuances of how
various phones implement the NITZ (Network Identity and Time Zone)
information supplied by the network):

Time and date is only updated when the handset does a network re-attach,
either by changing the VLR it is registered on, or by turning phone off and
then back on again. Generally VLR is only changed when handset moves to a
different area, note that this does not necessarily mean a different cell or
base station, as a VLR can control a number of base stations and hence
cells. I believe a re-attach can also be forced by changing to 2G (GSM).

Hope this helps.

My phone (NextG) changed its time automatically.

What, turned itself back 20 years to be consistent with the rest of
Melbourne?
