The Federal Government has announced Telstra's CDMA mobile phone network
will be switched off in less than two weeks.
Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy says Telstra has met the
requirements for the closure of the CDMA network on April 28.
The shutdown was delayed earlier this year because Telstra's replacement
service, the Next Generation network, was found to be inadequate.
Mr Conroy says anyone who still has a CDMA phone should make arrangements to
switch to another network as soon as possible.
He says Telstra has set up a free hotline to resolve any issues customers
might have with the handset replacement program and the Next G network.
The Federal Government says it is satisfied Telstra can now provide enough
mobile phone handsets to customers for a smooth transition from the network.
Mr Conroy says the move has been delayed by a shortage of handsets.
"They didn't have a full range of handsets and that's where we stepped in
and said, 'No, we won't be turning off the network in January'," he said.
"You have to make available the 'blue tick' handsets to as many people as
need them in their circumstances. So that's why we said no in January."
