Default how are people getting iphones here, because...

arent they locked to at&t for like 2 years?

how does it work - does the unlock, unlock the plan as well? What happens to
the person who bought it and signed it up or are they being sold at target
over the counter with no personal info?

When you buy an iPhone, it is not active. You have to connect it to iTunes
and activate it (which is when you give all the details and end up on the 2
year plan).
The hackers use third party solutions to activate, jailbreak and unlock the
phone (jailbreak lets you mess with the entire iPhone filesystem, run 3rd
party software etc) without ever activating it on iTunes or signing up for
any plan.

Why do people do this - get sucked into being trapped into one provider which
may or may not provide good service, just to get their hands on the latest
gadgets?

Any wonder too, that the phones were hacked, ten nanoseconds after being
released to the public.

Nokia are shit. Lousy keypads and shitty interfaces.

Dunno about Nokia's interfaces but some of their products' keypads leave a
lot to be desired. For example, the missus' 6233's keypads characters are
in a lime green sort of color, and whether the backlight is on or off they
are extremely difficult to read. In contrast other phones have keys with
black text and a white backlight. That works extremely well. Two examples
are the Samsung A501 and the Palm Treo 750.

I looked at some Motorola V series phones and some of them are the same as
the Nokia. Others aren't but this depends on the color style that you opt
for.

Thing is, this is an important feature given that the keypad is the base
interface. So, if it's difficult to read then it will be difficult to use,
whether for dialing numbers, entering SMS or other data.

It's got me why so many of the manufacturers have fucked up such a basic
requirement. It's not as if they haven't been making phones for very long
or something. And you gotta wonder what sort of testing they do before
releasing the products onto the market.

All I can suggest is that people do more than look at the fancy color
screen when checking out what phone to buy.
