Why would I need to download software to do this? Mobiles can do it now
without the need of additional software.

Or is there something that I'm missing here?

AFAIK, mobiles can't act as "Wi-Fi hotspots" now (without downloading
additional software).

To be sure, mobiles can presently be used to connect laptops to the
Internet, but not by acting as Wi-Fi hotspots.

You're probably missing the significance of the Wi-Fi hotspot. That could
be useful in a situation where there are several people wanting to
contemporaneously use their laptops while on the road, but they only have
one handset with data capability between them.

Please, for the love of God, do not respond to this by telling me that you
can't see why anyone would want to use their handset to create a Wi-Fi
hotspot (or that you yourself are quite happy using USB cables, or that it
would be cheaper for you to use a Wi-Fi router connected to your ADSL
line).

Correct.

Correct.

Correct.

Yeah, that's a point. Shared access, that is.

Sorry, don't believe in the guy. So you're outta luck.

As for the first point, maybe some people can see a use for this. As for
the second point, I'd use either bluetooth or a USB cable, whichever
provides a more stable connection. As for the third point, your sarcasm is
wasted on me...

This is a good concept, but with the cost of mobile data in Australia I
can't really see it gaining popularity.

Although I am sure in other countries where providers don't bend their
customers over each month when they send the bill out that it could be
very popular.

3 is pretty decent value.

Plenty use it here instead of DSL.
