MOBILE phone users in St George and Sutherland Shire have been advised to
check their handsets before Telstra shuts down the CDMA network on April 28.
The switch-off had been planned for January 28 and will render some mobile
phone handsets useless.
Telstra advised customers on the CDMA network to upgrade their mobile phone
to the Next G network.
CDMA mobile phones do not have SIM cards, display the words "Telstra CDMA"
on the screen and have an eight-digit alphanumeric code behind the battery.
Rheniel Ibalio of Fone Zone Hurstville said if customers switched to
Telstra's Next G network before the April 28 deadline, they could keep their
existing phone number.
"Because our store has customers who live in regional areas, our staff
understand the need for excellent coverage and can work with the customer to
select the most appropriate handset for them," Mr Ibalio said.
The shutdown will most seriously affect mobile phone users in rural and
remote areas who rely on the CDMA network.
But a spokesman for the National Parks and Wildlife Service said rangers in
the Royal National Park would not be affected.
"We are on another network, so nothing to worry about," the spokesman said.
There remains a slim possibility that the shutdown will not go ahead because
the Federal Government could make an eleventh hour intervention.
