Most remote communities without access to pay phones: Telstra

Telstra has criticised the former federal government over funding delays for
pay phones in remote communities around the Northern Territory.

A national newspaper has reported that a baby died last week after its
family had to walk 10 kilometres from the remote Centralian community of
Blackwater to Pupunya for medical treatment.

The area general manager for Telstra Country Wide says the pay phone at the
community was removed in 2004 after vandalism and funding for a replacement
was only approved by the federal communications department last week.

Mark Sweet says funding for pay phones in Indigenous communities was
announced last year, but is not quickly reaching Telstra.

"Under our universal service obligation, we'll generally provide a payphone
facility to any Indigenous community or community with a population of more
than 50 people.

"Certainly for these smaller communities and the like, the previous federal
government recognised that federal funding was needed to do it.

"Unfortunately, it just hasn't flowed as well as it might."

He says more than half of all remote communities are without pay phones.

In other words, the funding didn't get to where it was meant to go. Some

There's sure to be a few other phones. But the only people who use
payphones are people who haven't got access to any other phone. And if
the payphone's fucked, they've got no way of reporting it. Tel$cum must
have known though, because someone should be attending to empty it every
now and then.

Not necessarily. In the one "community" I'm familiar with, the reason
for vandalism appeared to be to get the loot out of the till. However,
as I haven't been that way for several months, I don't know if Telstra
is *still* going through the regular ritual of attaching new hardware
to the entrails hanging from the back of the cabinet. Maybe they've
given up on that one by now -- I would have!

Last year, tel$cum were planning to change the pay phone in Maningrida to
cards only. That phone there never got vandalised while i was working
there, i think they just couldn't be fucked paying someone to empty it
any more.
