Just got back from a week up in FNQ, Port Douglas and Cairns to be
exact.
While NextG coverage was generally pretty good, as was GSM, I could not
send any SMSes or MMSes without experiencing errors.
I had problems sending SMSes to Vodaphone (2), Optus (3) and Telstra GSM
(1). Likewise, they had similar experiences.
My wife was unable to successfully send either MMSes or SMS to a couple
of different networks, mainly Optus and 3.
Looks like, up there, at least, Telstra still has a way to go before it
irons out the bugs in its NextG network. Not sure what the go with the
more established GSM system is, though.

Sounds like problems the other networks need to work on.. so sms-ing Telstra
to Telstra works fine..

As it should. But they generally didn't have issues SMS'ing me.
We were at a wedding and some of us tested our phones against each
others. Mainly taking photos and MMS'ing them to each other, along with
a couple of plain SMSes.
Anyway, an update. Sister's in Thailand on her honeymoon. So far, SMSes
to her (Optus) and from her to me have all worked OK. Haven't tried any
MMSes mainly due to what it would cost. And it's a bit pointless if
there's no need to MMS each other, anyway, particularly if her phone
doesn't support it (dunno if it does or not).
