Only is "UMTS 850" is in the spec.

Google is showing me:

"GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, UMTS 2100"

so no on that basis.

If it doesn't do at least HSDPA at 850MHz, then Telstra won't retail it.
If it doesn't do at least UMTS at 850MHz, it won't even work.

Telstra NextG = HSDPA, UMTS at 850MHz
Telstra 3G = HSDPA, UMTS at 2100MHz
Telstra GSM = EDGE, GPRS, GSM at 900MHz and 1800MHz
Telstra CDMA (used to) = EV-DO, 1xRTT/CDMA2000, CDMA95 at 850MHz

No it won't. It's designed to work on the Optus 2100/900 UMTS network. Check
the details at gsmarena.com

Yes.

For some reason Telstra came up with the stupid "NextG" to refer to its
850MHz 3G service.

Nope. They're what I've just written above.

From a user's perspective, yes. Tech-wise, 3G is on a higher frequency than
NextG which runs on 850Mhz.

the bands vary from provider to provider. Optus 3G is on 2100Mhz and the new
900Mhz network that's being rolled out across Oz, supposedly to compete with
NextG. I don't know what frequencies that 3, Vodaphone or Telstra's 3G networks
run on.

2100MHz. Three and Telstra's 3.5G network is one and the same. Telstra
than independantly run a second 3.5G network they market as "NextG" at
850MHz.
