| | | Nokia N95 NextG model - where's a good place to buy one? My wife is interested in the Nokia N95 8 gig model. Telstra has them on a
$100 plan or over a grand if purchased outright.
I've had a look on Ebay. No great bargains there. Any of you folks know of
a good source for these things?
Thanks

Better than Telstra tho, even if you restrict it to those with decent feedback numbers.

I got mine off a Brisvegas ebay seller, no complaints and better value than anyone else I could find.
Corse I did require a local warranty, not interested in farting around
with a warranty from china etc on something that expensive. |

No, I dont currently.
Mainly because most of my Outlook alarms arent any use
on the mobile, they are only useful back on the house PC.
Havent decided what I will do on that stuff, only had it for a couple of weeks. |

Have you used the inbuilt VOIP client yet? |

Probably, if only to give it a whirl. Doesnt have any real
value for me, I get the few mobile calls I make for free.

Thanks. I've got a 6120, which doesn't come with an inbuilt VOIP client.
I've been using Fring ( www.fring.com), but the delay is at times quite
noticeable. I believe the server is in Europe.
AFAIK, the only Nokia handsets which have "inbuilt VOIP" are the N95 and
E51. Unfortunately, the E51 (which would have been perfect) isn't
available on contract with 3.
So I'm particularly interested if you notice any delay when using the N95's
VOIP client. |

There are quite a few Nokias with "Internet over Wireless LAN". Would
these do the job, or does it have to be inbuilt? |

I'd prefer it to be inbuilt, but wireless LAN support would be better than
nothing. I don't use ADSL at home (I just use wireless broadband), so it
would be a bit of mucking about setting up a router connected to a Huawei
E220 USB modem (or a Merlin XU870 ExpressCard modem). Obviously, using a
wireless LAN wouldn't be as "mobile".
(I forgot to add that the E65 also has inbuilt VOIP, but it doesn't support
HSDPA -- which is one of my requirements.) |

Just wondering why he bought this model if it is not going to be used for
all of its features.
What does the N95 do that's exceptional aside from VOIP and Outlook sync? |

I'll be using the other features, fuckwit.
> What does the N95 do that's exceptional aside from VOIP and Outlook sync?
Its got a much better camera than most, and I plan to use that
quite a bit, instead of farting around entering data manually,
like when shopping around and checking what is available
from where before I buy by taking a photo of the price tag etc.
It'll also be handy for taking a photo of a part I need to buy etc when it
isnt practical to take that part out with me when buying it in person etc.
The wifi is handy when I want the convenience of something
much more portable than a laptop, which I also have.
The GPS is handy when I dont want to cart the much bigger tomtom around outside the car.
I occasionally need net access when out of the house
and dont want to carry a laptop around to get that.
I use the mobile phone for everything when out of the house, dont use paper lists at all anymore.
I also use the mobile for accessing the home system when I'm out
of the house and want to check something on the home database
that I couldnt anticipate I would need when I left the house etc.
I also wanted something that would do everything I am likely to
want to do on a single device when out of the house, for years.
The main thing it doesnt have is a touch screen.
The iphone was also considered, but its quite limited in quite a few areas,
no user changeable battery, very restricted on what apps it can run, no
integrated GSP, not true 3G, no local warranty support currently, tho its
also got some interesting design ideas. I might get one of them too once
particularly the lack of real 3G is fixed.
I kept putting the N95 off because of its price, it costs more than a low
end laptop, which is pretty stupid in some ways, but I'm rolling in it, so
thats just a theoretical quirk and I eventually decided that I didnt care. |

Rod, being in a regional town, have you ever tried the super long range
cordless phones that Telstra SHops once had, the type that do 3km or so,
would they work around most of the town?

Nope. I got the impression from somewhere that that
distance is wildly optimistic so didnt bother to try it myself.
I hardly ever use the mobile phone for phone calls anyway,
the last time was well over a year ago when I bought a fridge
and wanted to get a mate of mine to pick it up in his ute etc
and I hadnt anticipated buying it, so hadnt set that up in advance. |

On second thoughts, it would make sense to use it at home.
I havent been able to justifiy voip till now, I pay for so few non local calls
that arent 13s or 1800s, but since this is free hardware, it would make sense.
So what I need is a minimum cost voip operation, and I'm not that
keen on giving my credit card to an out of country operation.
MNF is sort of viable and does support the N95 explicitly, but
the $20 up front thats call credits is a tad hard to justify. Thats
100ish national calls and that would take years to spend, literally.
Gotalk is $10 and that doesnt turn into call credits.
Pennytel is $10 refundable, doesnt turn into call credits either, and is an out
of country operation. The 8c calls to the US and pomland could be useful tho.

Not sure if it's useful to you, but you can use the $20 for SMS as well. https://www.mynetfone.com.au/offers/whirlpool

And they are a pain in the arse to deal with if you ever have billing
enquiries etc.

If you can get through. Pennytel have had a run of problems lately.
I'd just pay the $20 and go with MNF. Even if you never make a call with
them, $20 for a DID isn't too shabby.

Yeah, good point. Tho I currently get those for free since I am using up
a couple of slut signup credits and that will last for years yet at my current rate.

Kicking myself for not checking that myself.

Yeah, found that myself. The web site claims that the 1800 number works on weekends, but when
the chinese fella did get around to answering it, he claimed it only works for faults on the weekend.

Have a look at the ex-Wild users who were moved to Go-Talk following Wild
going bust. They had paid a refundable deposit with Wild, then had a prick
of a time getting anyone from Go-Talk to take any responsibility for it.

Even on that offer it's $20 for BYO hardware. https://www.mynetfone.com.au/offers/...vice-page-379/
You just get the cheaper call rates.

That fucks that idea then. Still, $20 isn't too bad whichever way you look
at it.
If you don't need a DID (so no incoming calls), don't need SMS and make
fuck-all outgoing calls, why are you interested in VoIP? Just cos you can
with the new handset?
FWIW, I've been using MNF for all calls (other than 13, 1300, 1800 and 000)
for about 6 months and the call quality is fine. Using it through a Billion
with the home phone wiring connected to the VoIP port on the router, so I
just use the standard pana cordless for all VoIP calls. My wife hasn't even
noticed any difference.
The handy thing for me has been the ability to select an out of state DID
number. That way, even though I'm in Melbourne, relo's in Brisvegas can call
me for the cost of a local call. (IIRC - you can also select an NZ number,
if you have any sheep-shagger mates)

More useful for a lot of people is pennytel's calls to mobiles, 10c per
min timed by the sec and no flagfall. I w- have been with them for about
3 months now and found calls to mobiles much cheaper than from a landline.

Skype works pretty well, but I think you may have to send your card
number o/s to buy credits in Euros. |

Skype only works with the computer on, a decent Voip service does not
need the computer be present at all. |

Nope.
I've used skype a number of times with no computer.

Skype doesn't require a computer. I don't know where you got that idea.

OK, might leave that one for now and get it later for the calls
to mobiles and the US etc when they get their act into gear.

Yeah, noticed that after I posted.

Sure, and it obviously does no harm to have it included.
> If you don't need a DID (so no incoming calls), don't need SMS and make fuck-all outgoing calls, why are you
> interested in VoIP? Just cos you can with the new handset?
Nope. I do make some non local and non 13 and 1800 calls, just not
enough to justify the cost of even the lowest cost hardware. Since it
comes free with the N95 bought for other reasons, might as well use
it when I can do that cheaply. Tho $20 is still hard to justify, I might
as well do it just for the convenience of being able to make 10c
national calls. I would certainly make more if they are available.

Yeah, thats what I was planning to do till the voip in the N95 turned up,
just couldnt justify the cost of replacing the current billion wifi router with
a billion wifi voip router because I dont spend that much on national calls.
> The handy thing for me has been the ability to select an out of state DID number. That way, even though I'm in

Yeah, was thinking about that, except that the main caller is in
another country town and the N95 battery life on wifi isnt that flash.
So it would be more convenient to call them after
they call me using the POTS system for peanuts.
> (IIRC - you can also select an NZ number, if you have any sheep-shagger mates)
Nar, never stooped that low. | |
