Official or otherwise, aus.comms or aus.comms.mobile are very poor sales
avenues for several reasons.
The problems (no particular order):
1) These are binary groups - you can't attach a photo to your ad, even if
you want to. Potential buyers are looking at your description only - it's
a second-hand product sight-unseen. Price effect: Bad for you.
1) Assuming you want money up-front, potential buyers won't trust you
unless you are reasonably well known here. Even then people will most
likely treat you with suspicion. There's absolutely no guarantee built into
the sales process. Price effect: Bad for you.
3) There are very few potential buyers. Look over the posts for the past
month - how many discrete "from" names do you see? Probably 100 or so at
best. Assume that there are another 100 or so people who browse and you can
probably guess that you are selling to a potential market of 200 approx.
Tiny. Price effect: Bad for you.
4) Many of the people here are knowledgeable. They know the value of a
second hand phone and would only buy if they see a bargain. In other words,
you will most likely sell for less than elsewhere. Price effect: Bad for
you.
Over at eBay the opposite is true for each of the above. In addition, there
are a large number of buyers visiting the site and for the ones who punch in
"nokia mobile" into the search engine it is highly likely that they want to
buy (or check the market prior to selling!). Anyway, it would be safe to
assume that eBay has far more genuine mobile phone buyers cruising its site
than do these two newsgroups.
There's also a chance at eBay that you entice a couple of undisciplined
bidders who bid one another up - and pay more than the market value.
The main downside of eBay is that you pay a small listing fee (a couple of
$$) and a commission if you sell. Well worth it, in my opinion.
Anyway, good luck.
