Default SMS: prepaid <> postpaid?

A friend in France can SMS her friend's Virgin prepaid phone here
in Australia, but can't SMS to my postpaid SCM (Optus network) phone.

As here we are both on the Optus network, can there be any logical
explanation for this difference?

Was your number (the one which doesn't receive) ported from
another network?

When you say cant, do you mean it refuses the SMS or that it never gets thru ?

What is the first half of both numbers ?

Can't answer that, but noticed while in USA could not receive sms sent
to me from countries outside Oz, nor could these countries receive my
sms.

Maybe this part of mobile telephony not robust?

My understanding is that the French network allows and charges for the sending
of the text message (approx half a euro!), it's just that the message never
reaches my Australian postpaid handset.

Receiving international SMS is the one issue that's not always
completely resolved with number porting.

That could well be the problem, there have been some glitches with porting.

And I suppose no one would be interested in fixing it?

When I moved from Telstra to Southern Cross they gave me the choice
of networks: Telstra or Optus. I chose Optus. I suppose I could ask
them to move me to Telstra network. Supposing I do, is it likely
I would regain the lost SMS capability?

They get no choice on that if you monster them using the TIO.

We'll see. I've asked SCT to send me a Telstra sim.
