I had an unused CDMA prepaid service which got cut off with the closure on
Monday. Do you think if I wait, Telstra will throw a last minute offer to
retain the service (eg freebie ZTE handset)? Or should I try porting the
number to Optus with their offer for ex-Telstra CDMA subscribers connecting
with them?

Why should they bother ?

Depends on whether you want to keep the number or not.

The ZTE is one of Telstra's finest pieces of technology, not! Mate got one to
replace his Moto CDMA and quickly found it was shite. Phoned the Telscum NextG
helpline and reported his issues.
Telscum: "ah, you've got a ZTE then.."
(so it was hardly an orphan.)
Mate: "yup"
Telscum: "hold tight, we're sending you a replacement LG handset/carkit"
Mate: "what should I do with the ZTE?"
Telscum: (short silence, suppressing the obvious response) "Anything you like.
Don't send it back."

Depends on the coverage you want. If you want CDMA-like coverage your only
chance is to hope that nextG eventually achieves that. Optus 3G won't ever come
close.

so they do not lose a valuable customer. I have recharged once in 12 months
with a minimal amount, surely their execs would be jumping out the windows
if i left telstra?

You are ridiculous
CDMA IS DEAD YOU WILL RECEIVE NO OFFERS

Do whatever you want. You've got 28 days from 29 Apr to get reactivated, and
switch to NextG or complete a port

equivalent to what - two jam tins and a short piece of string?
> The ZTE is one of Telstra's finest pieces of technology, not! Mate got one to
A couple of my mates who are tradies have the ZTE. They seem to have had
no problems with them which surprised me. They're battered and scratched,
as you'd expect from phones that cop a lot of abuse out on site.

Two jam tins and a piece of string ARE equivalent to a Moto CDMA phone.
