Telstra drops bill payment fee
"Telstra has admitted it was wrong to charge a $2.20 administration fee to
customers who wanted to pay their bills by post or over-the-counter.
The company's chief executive officer, David Thodey, says the fee will be
dropped over the next few months and Telstra will automatically refund
customers who have paid the charge since September 14.
Mr Thodey says Telstra has listened to customer feedback and will find
different ways to encourage them to switch to electronic payments.
Telstra spokesman Craig Middleton concedes the fee was the wrong way to
encourage customers to switch to electronic payments.
"We believe that while electronic payments are the way of the future [with]
various benefits, there are other ways to encourage people to do that," he
said.
Seniors organisation the Council on the Aging welcomed the move, saying the
fee discriminated against older people who did not have a computer or use
the internet.
"It is great to see Telstra has been prepared to listen to legitimate
concerns raised by many groups within the community," the group's chief
executive, Ian Yates, said in a statement.
"We also call on Telstra's competitors, who still charge similar fees, to
remove them too." "
