Telstra expecting over 53 million NYE text messages

More than 53 million text messages are expected to bring in the new year, up
to 8 million more than last year.

Telstra have boosted its network capacity as SMS, video calls, and picture
message traffic at an all time high.

Jeremy Mitchell from Telstra says as the clock strikes midnight everybody
will be able to send a message.

"We've built in extra capacity and we've got our technicians who won't be
popping the champagne on the night because they will be too busy working to
make sure everyone's messages get through."

Thing is, no one will know for sure whether or not their MMS/SMSes get through
unless the recipients all respond with a reply (and that the original sender
gets that reply).

The message service thing must be the single biggest cash cow that any telco can
have. No guarantee of service, no refunds if it fails to work, something that
costs bugger all to deliver. Built on cheap technology that requires little
maintenance. Hence the guarantee of huge profits from this product line.

Like I said, nice gig if you can get it.

There are technicians on-call all night and staff monitoring traffic 24x7 in
the GOC

Vodafone once offered that service in Australia. (From memory, it was
originally free -- then increased to 5 cents per read receipt.)

Works here too. Telstra offer it (for a fee of course) and Voda used to
(don't know if they still do).

And who says you get billed for SMS that don't get delivered? My bills
with Optus over the years have often shown a 0c charge for x number of
SMSs that weren't delivered (recipient was out of range for longer than
the max. TTL for SMS on the network).

I've never had the patience or ever bothered to remember to check to see if
there were SMSes that were billed for zero cost.

Having said that when I first got my Samsung and was testing the MMS feature of
the phone, neither my daughter nor my sister were getting photos that I was
MMSing them. One's with 3, the other Optus. However, my wife on Telstra GSM
received them OK.

I still got billed for them.
