Default Telstra 'needs millions' to extend NT broadband network

From
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...ction=business

Telstra says it needs hundreds of millions of dollars in government
subsidies to extend high-speed broadband to the Northern Territory's remote
communities.

The telco is currently competing with an Optus-led consortium for a Federal
Government tender to build a multi-billion dollar fibre optic network that
would reach 98 per cent of the population.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has recently indicated she would put money
towards extending the fibre optic network to parts of Queensland that would
not otherwise be covered.

Telstra regulatory affairs chief Phil Burgess says a similar injection of
funds would be needed in the Northern Territory.

"The providers like Telstra and others we need to find a way to get to that
other 2 per cent working in partnership with state governments and the
Commonwealth," he said.

"Everyone in this country needs broadband at the earliest possible
opportunity."
